FREE Neighborhood Recycling Service
Hi Neighbor,
My name is Bennett, and I’m starting a small neighborhood recycling service.
I would be happy to help you recycle your aluminum cans for FREE!
FAQs
Why did you start this service?
1I asked my Dad if I could have an allowance. He explained that everyone in our family does chores to help around the house and on the farm. But if I wanted to earn money I could start a business. So I started Bennett’s Recycling Service!
How much does it cost?
2It’s FREE!
How do you earn money if the service is free?
3The regional recycling facility (NRI) pays 70¢/lb for aluminum cans. My Dad and I did a math “story problem” by weighing a single can and figured out that it takes approximately 40 cans to earn $1.
Can you recycle other kinds of metal?
4Yes. I focus on cans because it’s simple. But I can also recycle steel cans (from canned vegetables/fruit) and scrap (from old car parts, gutters, siding, appliances). Let me know if you have unwanted metal you would like me to pick up for you.
If you want to also save steel cans alongside aluminum, just put them in the same bin and I will sort them.
What do you plan to do with the money you earn?
5Right now I save everything in my piggy bank. I also have business expenses for supplies (like bins, bags, and gasoline to transport cans to the recycling facility).
Someday when I’m older I hope to buy a 4-wheeler!
How does pick-up work?
6We provide clean cardboard collection bins with a plastic liner (to prevent spills and leaks). When it’s time for pick-up, simply place the bin outside your house or garage. I will remove the bag and replace it with a new one.
We can schedule a weekly pick-up time, or you can call or email when your bin is full. My (Dad’s) phone and email are listed on the front of your bin. Contact us any time!
I already have a recycling bin. Why should I recycle with you?
7Garbage haulers empty recycling bins every two weeks. If your family is like ours, the recycle bin often fills up fast — before the next pick-up day. By setting aside cans in Bennett’s bin, you save space in your bin for more cardboard, plastic, and glass.
When you Recycle with Bennett, you are also helping me learn how to run a business. This business uses lots of math, economics, science, and communication skills. I get to apply the things I learn in school to the real world. Business requires responsibility and discipline. I also love talking with my neighbors :)
May I help you recycle your cans?
Thank you for giving me the opportunity help my neighbors and learn how to run a business.
